Ask AMA: What is Microneedling & PRP

Looking to easily fix your dull skin?

If you want to start a new chapter in your skin health journey, this is the perfect place to start. Here is what you need to know about this procedure.

Ashley using the SkinPen, which is the Microneedling tool on someone’s chest.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a device with tiny, shallow needles that create hundreds of invisible and controlled puncture wounds on the top layer of the skin. If it sounds painful and aggressive – it is not because you will be numbed before the procedure starts!

These micro-wounds trigger the body to produce new collagen, elastin, and capillaries, plumping the skin and breaking up scar tissue. Which will then target fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, sagging skin and scarring.

The more procedures you get done, the more improvement you’ll see in your skin texture, firmness, and the level of hydration in your skin.

What can I expect during treatment?

If you give us an hour of your time, we can make magic happen with this Microneedling tool.

  • Step 1: One of our skin providers will prep your skin by cleansing and numbing your face.
  • Step 2: They will then apply a serum to make sure the skin is hydrated and protected.
  • Step 3: Then the microneedling will begin!
  • Step 4: The provider will protect your skin with post-procedure cream and an SPF.

How does it feel?

The best part about this procedure, is that you are completely numb from Step 1. This makes it easier for our providers to go deeper into the skin without you feeling the needles that are working their magic.

Your skill will turn red and may even bleed a bit, which is completely normal. You’ve got to remember that this procedure is creating those controlled puncture wounds on the top layer of the skin. Without it doing that, then your skin wouldn’t be able to produce bring up all that new and fresh collagen.

What will my recovery be like?

  • The day of treatment: Once you are done with treatment, your skin will most likely be red for the remainder of the day. Anytime your skin is healing like this, you’ll want to avoid heat and sweat on your face. Meaning, no exercise, hot tubs, and saunas for 24 hours.
  • 24 hours after treatment: Your skin may feel a little tight! However, the redness will have faded. One of the things you want to understand is that the mico-wounds heal very quickly. It’s like how a paper cut heals within a day or two. Feel free to apply makeup 24 hours after your treatment.
  • 48 hours after treatment: You may experience dryness, scaling, redness and swelling 2 days after treatment, but that is completely normal and should go away within the next few days. If your skin is peeling, use a mild exfoliant to remove the dead skin from your face.

After every procedure, make sure to keep skin hydrated and to always wear SPF. Your skin is especially attracted to the sun after a procedure like this, so make sure to protect it! Also be sure to avoid retinols and brightening ingredients while your skin continues to heal.

When will I see the results?

Get ready to watch your skin turn from dull to glowing, from dull to smooth, and from dry to hydrating.

If your skin is especially stubborn, it may take multiple treatments to get your skin to where it needs to be – but that is something that one of our providers will plan with you.

What is PRP and how do people use this with Microneedling?

If you haven’t heard about PRP yet, then you are about to get really excited about what this “liquid gold” can do to your skin.

Platelet-rich plasma, also known as PRP, is a great addition to microneedling treatments because it makes your skin transform in ways by the help of your own skin.

PRP is taken from your very own blood. People often think it’s red because it’s coming from your blood, but we separate the blood and the PRP comes to life as a golden color, which is why we call it “liquid gold”. We call it this because of its extraordinary rejuvenating properties in healing the skin faster and repairing it quicker.

How does PRP work?

Step 1: We draw your blood in the office and then separate it in a centrifuge. It takes a few minutes to get it completely separated.

Step 2: The PRP is then applied to your face after the numbing cream and can also be injected beneath the skin’s surface to stimulate new collagen production and to promote healing. If you have deeper lines and creases in your face, then this is the perfect combination for you.

Microneedling at Ashley McFarland Aesthetics

If you caught our last blog, you’ve familiarized yourself with our newest treatment: Vivace. Now, we’re here to break down all 3 types of microneedling we offer to help you decide which would be best for you.

The tip of this device has 12 microneedles that create a series of micro-injuries to the surface of the skin creating open “micro-channels” in the skin. This stimulates a natural healing process generating an increase in collagen. This treatment improves skin quality at the cellular level, leaving you with supple, youthful looking skin.

Microneedling with ZO Accelerated Serum

ZO Accelerated Serum
ZO Facial Serums

In this treatment we use your choice of ZO’s accelerated serum to layer on the skin and enter the open “micro-channels.” With options of Brightening, Firming or Redness reduction, these serums penetrate within the skin for maximum benefit and infuse the skin with a deep-penetrating bioactive formula to improve the appearance of most skin concerns. Microneedling with PRP

In this session of microneedling. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), aka the body’s “liquid gold”, contains the growth factors and healing properties of the blood. It has many natural and long-term benefits when used medically as well as cosmetically. PRP contains highly concentrated growth factors to help tissue heal and repair, which can help solve a variety of skin related issues. These platelets contain bioactive proteins and growth factors that serve to accelerate tissue repair and regeneration to activate stem cells. This age-defying wrinkle treatment stimulates collagen production and cell turnover, resulting in fresh, healthy, younger looking skin. Research studies on PRP has shown improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, hair loss, texture, and scarring when topically placed and/or injected underneath the skin. Injecting PRP can address volume loss, acne pitting, laugh lines, and under-eyes (darkness and circles).

Vivace

Vivace is a skin rejuvenation treatment that uses a combination of microneedling and radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Vivace can help make your skin firmer, tighter, and smoother. It addresses concerns like facial wrinkles and fine lines, acne scars, large pores, and uneven skin tone and texture using 36 gold-tipped needles on a hand-held device. By using the radiofrequency element, Vivace microneedling allows patients to be able to see visible results faster than traditional microneedling. Vivace also uses LED light power to calm inflammation during treatment and speed up healing time. Another notable difference that sets Vivace apart is that RF micro-needling is extremely customizable. The needle depth and RF energy intensity can be adjusted to meet the skin tones and unique skin needs of each patient. Traditional micro-needling has limited variables to meet the specific aesthetic goals.

Mindful Beauty: Micro-Needling

What is Micro-needling?

Microneedling is a cutting-edge anti-aging treatment that improves the appearance of many common cosmetic concerns like: fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, uneven texture, and dull skin tone. During your treatment, one of our medical professional providers will use a handheld device called a SkinPen, gliding it across the surface of the designated treatment area.

What is PRP?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP, aka the body’s “liquid gold”, contains healing properties and has many natural and long-term benefits when used medically as well as cosmetically. PRP is highly concentrated growth factors to help tissue heal and repair, which can help solve a variety of skin related issues.

Where do you use PRP?

PRP is most commonly microneedled into the skin, injected or both! Depending on the patient’s goals and needs, our providers will identify which process of PRP microneedling and injection will best meet the goals. Injecting PRP can address volume loss, acne pitting, laugh lines, and under-eyes (darkness and circles).

Whichever treatment process is right for you, the goal of using PRP is to cause a natural reparative process, sending signals to your body to produce more collagen and improve skin quality.

PRP with microneedling + injections

For even more collagen boosting (brightening under eyes or targeting those deep smile lines), you can add PRP injections to your treatment. Prior to micro-needling, we will inject some of your PRP to areas of concern. We can inject the PRP in any area of the face that you’d like to tell the body to boost collagen. The most common areas include under eyes, smile lines, and scars anywhere on the body. We also see great results with PRP hair restoration for thinning hair.

What are the results of PRP?

After having a PRP microneedling treatment done, your collagen production will be a continuous process up to a year after your initial treatment. PRP will leave you with ultra-soft skin, reduction in darkness under eyes and soften any scarring you may have. You’ll be left with the healthy, glowing skin you’ve always wanted that not even makeup can give you.

Who is a good candidate for PRP?

Microneedling, PRP, and PRP injections are excellent treatments for the vast majority of people. From acne to anti-aging, incorporating microneedling and PRP with any skin treatment regimen will yield gradual, natural results. We always recommend that our patients and future patients schedule a consultation regarding microneedling and PRP. No patient is the same and all have different skin concerns. Making a consultation gives our providers a good idea of how to customize the patient’s needs. This allows our providers to pin-point some root causes and establish a treatment plan going forward that is best suited for the patient to yield the best possible results.

PRP Hair Restoration!

If you’ve been noticing worsening hair quality, decreasing hair volume, or other symptoms related to hair loss, PRP hair restoration might be a viable treatment option for you. PRP hair restoration uses plasma which is isolated from your blood. This plasma has a high level of platelets, and this serum is injected back into your scalp. The scalp is numbed with lidocaine and then injected while simultaneously using a scalp stimulator to confuse pain signals to further minimize discomfort. Although it is effective and safe, we always recommend that you schedule a consultation and evaluation to determine whether or not this procedure is appropriate for your hair loss problems.
