What is Fraxel?

It is that time of year we have all been waiting for! Cool weather, sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes and FRAXEL!

Fall and winter are the absolute best seasons to remove unwanted pigment and sun damage from our skin. If you have overindulged in the summer sun, fear not. We have your solution. Fraxel!

What is Fraxel? Fraxel is a brand of laser that delivers fractional skin resurfacing. Fraxel Dual in particular, features two wavelengths of 1927 and 1550 to treat sun damage, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and acne scars. It can completely change the overall tone and texture of a person’s skin. Fraxel delivers tiny dots of laser, only treating a fraction of the skin, leaving healthy skin in between the treated areas, which speeds healing and minimizes downtime. It is the “Gold Standard” in laser skin resurfacing. Compared to other more invasive treatments, the downtime for Fraxel is way more desirable considering the dramatic results it can deliver. Patients receiving Fraxel are back to a normal routine within a week.

Things you should know before you schedule your Fraxel…

  • A consultation is always recommended before scheduling any laser treatment. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for laser treatments.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for at least one month prior to (and after) your treatment
  • Let our office know if you are prone to getting cold sores. You will need to prep with a prescription of an antiviral to prevent an outbreak in the treated area.
  • You will need to discontinue use of all exfoliating products (retinols, glycolics, salicylic) 10 days prior to treatment.
  • Some patients prone to hyperpigmentation will need to prep with a product containing hydroquinone or another brightening agent to suppress their melanin (pigment) for a few weeks prior to treatment and post treatment.

What to expect the day of a Fraxel Treatment…

  • Your provider will cleanse your skin and take before pictures.
  • Numbing cream will be applied for approximately one hour prior to treatment
  • Our office offers the option to add nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to any Fraxel treatment for an additional charge. This is a favorite, especially for those who tend to get a little anxious with treatments! It gives a more carefree experience, and it wears off in minutes, making it completely safe to drive home afterwards. We recommend eating some food prior to nitrous use.
  • Fraxel in our office always includes PRP (platelet rich plasma). PRP is such a fantastic way to increase your results! In case you are new to PRP, it is simple. Your blood will be drawn during the numbing process and spun down to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. Plasma contains platelets which contain growth factors. These growth factors will help to stimulate your own collagen and help healthy cells reproduce. The result is thicker, more elastic skin! Applying PRP after Fraxel will help calm skin quicker and speed up the healing process. Basically, a no brainer! One of our experienced injectors can also inject the PRP underneath the skin. Injecting it under the eyes for example can improve crepiness and hollowness. It is also a wonderful way to improve “smoker lines” around the mouth.
  • A post care kit will be sent home after the first treatment and your provider will go over all post care with you.
  • Immediately after treatment, the skin will feel sunburned and will be intense for about 3 hours. After 3 hours, intensity subsides greatly and will be very tolerable.
  • Swelling is expected post Fraxel. In fact, the swelling is what creates the collagen we all want and need.

After Fraxel….

Downtime with Fraxel varies from patient to patient, depending on treatment parameters and settings. The deeper the treatment, the more swelling expected. Usually by day 3, the skin will feel rough and have a sandpaper like texture. These are all microscopic scabs that will appear dark and eventually slough away, leaving fresh new skin. Gentle products only for the week following, and a good physical sunscreen are important. Avoid sweating for approximately 72 hours and make sure to wear a hat when outdoors. You are generating new baby skin and it is VERY susceptible to sun damage.

A series of 3 is always a good rule of thumb when planning Fraxel. Spacing the treatments 4 to 6 weeks apart will maximize outcome. Results will last longer with a proper at home regimen, including a retinol, sunscreen, and antioxidants. Your aesthetician will be happy to recommend some great products to get the most from your Fraxel.

Fall Procedure Prep

Though temperatures are high, fall is right around the corner! Fall makes for a perfect time to schedule the treatment you’ve been putting off all summer. Whether correcting sun damage, removing dead skin, reversing the signs of aging, or helping with pigmentation, we have the right procedure for you and your skin concerns.

Here are a few recommendations to prepare the skin for any future TREATMENT (Vivace, Fraxel, VI or Chemical Peels):

Fraxel being performed on a patient
  • It is best to prep the skin with a well-rounded skincare regimen for 1-2 months in advance before any treatment; cleanser, antioxidants, vitamin c, retinol, and SPF. Better known as, our Big 5 of Skin Care. Growth factors are also very beneficial in helping create healthier cells. Good skincare creates healthier tissue and will help the skin react better to the treatment for optimum results!
  • If prone to hyperpigmentation, the skin needs to be prepped with hydroquinone (an ingredient that suppresses melanin), ideally for 1-2 months. Hydroquinone will also be ideal to keep pigment suppressed post treatment.
  • Please let your treatment provider know if you are prone to cold sores in the area being treated so that an antiviral medication can be prescribed. Heat from the laser can trigger an outbreak in these people if not suppressed.
  • Make sure to stay out of the sun 7-10 days prior to treatment
  • Stop retinol use 7-10 days prior to treatment. You may continue use of hydroquinone up until the night before.
  • Avoid waxing one week before and 4 weeks after treatment
  • Chemical peels are a great treatment that will resurface the skin and greatly improve tone and texture. It is a great way to quickly remove damaged skin, especially if you have an important event coming up with little time to prep. (We all have busy social schedules during the holiday season). Fall is typically the beginning of “chemical peel season” since we aren’t in the sun as much. Your aesthetician will know which one is best!
ZO 3 Step Peel being prepared

Did you know your skin requires different products in the cooler months? Here are a few recommendations from our Aesthetician, Tricia about achieving your optimal fall skin through the use of products:

ZO Skin Care
  • At home skincare regimen is an absolute MUST! Investing in medical grade skin products is so important if you aren’t doing so already. Medical grade skincare contains the percentages of ingredients that are needed to achieve the best results. Over the counter products can often contain low quality ingredients and/or ingredients that are not strong enough to make noticeable changes, only leading to frustration and feeling like you have wasted money and time.
  • Retinol products will turn cells over quicker and help remove top layers of skin cells, revealing new fresh skin. Your aesthetician can recommend one that will best work with your skin type. All retinols are NOT created equal! Sometimes it is necessary to use a retinol less frequently in the colder months since the air is dryer and skin is typically a little more sensitive. Just be mindful to stay on a regular regimen and don’t stop completely!
  • Antioxidants are a must to protect your skin. Vitamins C, E will help protect your skin from environmental factors that will only break down cells and compromise the quality of the cells. This is especially a problem in fall and winter as the weather changes. Vitamin C is also serves as a great brightener!
  • Hyperpigmentation is always a big concern after the summer months. There are medical grade lighteners and brighteners that can really help! Hydroquinone is an example of a lightener that works by suppressing the melanin your body creates. It is a great fighter against unwanted pigment, especially when used in unison with a medical grade retinol. There are also non hydroquinone lighteners that prove to be very helpful such as Kojic acid.
  • SPF is MANDATORY in the fight against aging year-round. Do not slack in the fall/winter! Without it, your cells are vulnerable to damage from UVA, UVB and IR rays. Ingredients such as Zinc and Titanium will physically protect the skin from these types of rays. Always choose an SPF of 30 or higher and high-quality ingredients.
  • Sometimes skin needs a heavier moisturizer entering the colder months.
  • Adding a lip moisturizer might be necessary to combat the dryness of colder temps and windier days. Getting yourself on a regular regimen that includes all these things will improve your skin tremendously. It will also help strengthen it in preparation for anti-aging treatments, such as RF microneedling and lasers, all of which are ideal to do in the fall and winter months!

Let’s get fall ready by scheduling an appointment with one of our providers. It’s never too early to get on the books for your first treatment. Schedule today by booking online http://www.ashleymcfarlandaesthetics.com

The Power of Sculptra

What is Sculptra?

The power of Sculptra is equivalent of reversing the clock. Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable that helps gradually replace lost collagen, the most common protein in the body that is used to form a framework to support cells and tissue, for results that can last up to two years. Sculptra is different than your traditional filler as it works with your body to stimulate collagen production lost to aging while rebuilding and reinforcing your skin’s structural foundation.

Why is collagen important?

Collagen is a fibrous protein in the deep dermis that gives skin structure and supports the functions of elastin and hyaluronic acid (HA), which helps maintain the skin’s shape, while keeping it smooth and hydrated. A healthy supply of collagen makes for a more youthful-looking complexion.

  • Collagen loss is 1% per year at the age of 20
  • By 45, 25% of collagen is lost
Collagen graph that shows loss with each year
Collagen loss through the years

How many sessions of Sculptra is needed and how often should they be performed?

On average, a series of three treatment sessions over the course of a few months will be needed. The number of injections at each session will vary, depending on the degree of correction needed and the treatment plan determined by you and your provider. The power of Sculptra can restore years worth of aging in just a few treatments.

Who is a good candidate for Sculptra?

Good candidates for Sculptra treatments are those who want to restore fullness to their face slowly and discreetly to correct fine lines and wrinkles. Sculptra can treat submalar hollowing, jawlines, cheek sinking and temple hollowing.

What do I do after my Sculptra treatment?

  1. A cold pack is recommended for helping prevent bruising and to calm common swelling. Within the first 24 hours of treatment, apply a cloth-wrapped cold pack to the treated area for a few minutes at a time. Never apply ice directly to the skin.
  2. Facial massage is an important step in the healing process. Massage the treated area for five minutes five times a day for five days after treatment, as recommended by your provider.
  3. Avoiding direct sunlight is advised. After treatment, excessive sunlight and UV lamp exposure should be avoided until any initial swelling and redness go away. Your doctor will provide guidelines on sunscreen protection and how to avoid excessive sunlight.

SoME – The future of skincare

In the world of anti-aging and advanced skincare, the most powerful solution is a solution that comes from YOU, and Ashley McFarland Aesthetics is now carrying that revolutionary serum that is all about YOU. SoME is a personalized topical take-home cosmetic product that utilizes Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).

SoME skin benefits

What is SoME skincare and how will it benefit me in the future?

SoME Skincare + PRP is a skin rejuvenating treatment that uses all-natural ingredients to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, enhance skin tone and texture, discoloration, puffiness, and darkness around the eyes.

Until now, there has never been a topical skincare product, made from YOU, that provided drastic results. SoME Skincare + PRP uses the body’s own regenerative properties to stimulate natural collagen and elastin for visibly renewed firmness and luminosity. SoME Skincare preserves platelet components allowing the product to remain effective over the course of three months.

How does SoME skincare fit into my daily skincare routine?

You may use SoME Skincare after cleansing and before applying your moisturizer and sunscreen. SoME Skincare should be used like any other high-quality serum and can simplify your routine by requiring the use of only one product for eyes, face, and neck.

Benefits of PRP:

The field of orthopedics was the first to discover the true healing and regenerative properties of growth factors derived from Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). Growth factors, which are proteins that occur naturally and stimulate our cells to reproduce themselves. Growth factors bind to receptors on the cell’s surface and it’s there that they begin their work, all throughout the body.

Fraxel: The Ultimate Way to Reverse the Clock!

Fraxel Resurfacing Laser Performed on Skin

The wait is FINALLY over! Ashley McFarland Aesthetics is excited to announce that Fraxel is here and ready to transform your skin and reverse the clock!

What is Fraxel and how does it work?

Fraxel is a resurfacing laser that goes beyond any traditional laser by using two wavelengths to treat the surface of the skin and stimulate collagen beneath the skin to help deliver results that you can see and feel. This treatment can be fully customizable depending on your skin needs.

What does Fraxel do for the skin?

Tricia King performs a Fraxel treatment

Fraxel can treat the following:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Brown spots
  • Sun damage
  • Age spots
  • Surgical scars
  • Acne scars

What areas of the body can I treat?

If you have a skin issue in need of help, Fraxel can address and treat it. Some areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Hands
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Back
  • Abdomen

How many sessions will I need?

Most studies suggest that on average, an effective treatment regimen is 3 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart. Depending on your condition and schedule, you and your provider may choose to space treatment sessions further apart. Results are immediate and progressive, with optimal improvement usually visible in 2 to 3 months. This time frame and treatment structure allow for healing and the production of new collagen to replace damaged tissue.

What can I expect after my treatment?

Depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment, you may experience redness or swelling after the procedure that diminishes as quickly as the next day or over the next several days. More aggressive treatments, such as ablative procedures with Fraxel repair, require more downtime. As for results there are both immediate and progressive results. Soon after the treatment, the surface of your skin will feel softer, look brighter and show more even tone. The next 3 to 6 months will bring additional improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continues.

Why do you use PRP with my Fraxel treatment?

Fraxel and PRP are powerful on their own, but together they offer a powerhouse treatment that will transform and rejuvenate your appearance. Studies show clear benefits for patients who opt for PRP with their laser resurfacing, including additional collagen production, less redness, and a speedier recovery.

How much does a treatment cost?

Our new laser treatment performed on a patient

QWO: Cellulite’s Worst Enemy!

Ashley McFarland, our NP getting ready to treat a patient with our cellulite treatment; QWO.
Ashley McFarland with QWO

What is QWO?

QWO is the first and only FDA-Approved injectable cellulite treatment capable of permanent reduction of cellulite on the buttocks whether it’s light, moderate, or severe.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a part of our biology. 9 out of 10 women will have cellulite in their lifetime. Cellulite ‘dips’ occur around pockets of fat and cellulite appears because the fat wedges between connective tissue. QWO is an enzymatic that helps disrupt and break down fibers that are responsible for the creation of cellulite. From there, fat cells are redistributed, and it helps stimulate production of new collagen.

Connective tissue shown in skin with and without cellulite
Skin with and without Cellulite

Why do we get cellulite?

Cellulite is not caused by what, or how much, you eat. It isn’t fat. It isn’t sagging skin. And it isn’t because you aren’t exercising enough. Unfortunately, no matter how much you work out, how healthy you eat, or wish it away – cellulite won’t budge unless you get to the source.

What causes cellulite?

There are 3 things that together cause cellulite signature dimples. Those include skin — over time, skin thins. Fat – fat cells enlarge and push against the skin. And fibrous bands – The fibrous bands under skin thicken and cause tension.

It is important to note that QWO is not for fat reduction. For fat reduction treatment, please see our Coolsculpting information. https://ashleymcfarlandaesthetics.com/ashleymcfarlandaesthetics-com-coolsculpting-elite/

Does QWO work?

QWO works in three ways. First by releasing fibrous bands, second by redistributing fat cells, and lastly by stimulating the growth of new collagen.

Would I be a good candidate for QWO?

The best course of action is to come in for a consultation for our providers to evaluate the severity of your cellulite and determine whether you’re a good candidate; however, if you have visible cellulite then you are likely a good candidate.

QWO stacked and ready to be injected.

How long does QWO last? Is it permanent?

Patients can typically expect to see visible results after their first session. On average, results appear within 3 weeks. For optimal results, a series of 3 QWO treatments should be performed. Although the treatment is quick and has little to no downtime, so it’s extremely effective. The effects are permanent. Three sessions are needed, each spaced 21 days apart. The main factor to consider with this is how severe your cellulite is. The more severe, additional treatments beyond the three sessions may be needed, and will take longer to achieve desired results.

Before and after a full treatment of QWO for cellulite reduction.
Before and after QWO with treatment

What to expect from your visit:

Either Ashley or Blair will first mark where you will be injected. They will inject QWO directly into the affected areas of the buttocks. We can inject up to 12 dimples per buttocks per session. The entire session will only last about 15 minutes.

What areas can I treat with QWO?

Women can use QWO to treat cellulite in their buttocks or the backs of legs.

Is QWO safe? What are the side effects?

After receiving a QWO injection you may experience soreness, bruising, and swelling around the injection site that could appear immediately after or in the following days. Other mild side effects may include redness, pain, itching, warmth, and discoloration. Bruising and other side effects could last up to 2-3 weeks after each treatment. Tylenol or Ibuprofen can be taken to ease any minor discomforts.

How do I get scheduled?

You can schedule with us via call, text, or email. If you would like to make a consultation before your treatment, we are happy to see you! Summer is right around the corner, and we want you to be confident in your shorts this year. Start your treatment today to see great results by warm weather!

Botox for Dimpled Chin | Mentalis Botox Murfreesboro

Botox for Dimpled Chin Murfreesboro TN

We all love Botox for relaxing forehead and around the eyes wrinkles, but what about elsewhere on the face? Specifically, does botox work for a dimpled chin? In this post, we are going to be discussing one of the “specialty” injection sites for neurotoxins, what it is all about, and why you might want to consider treating your mentalis!

What is the Mentalis?

The mentalis is a muscle located inside the chin. Occasionally, the mentalis muscles can be hyperactive when someone holds a lot of tension in their chin and jaw area. This can lead to TMJ symptoms, teeth clenching or grinding, headaches, and a dimpled chin appearance. This is also called an “orange peel chin”. A hyperactive mentalis can be caused by a number of factors, such as stress or genetics, just as with any muscle in the face.

How Botox Works

Botox works below the surface of the skin and temporarily relaxes the muscle activity underneath that causes lines and wrinkles to help them appear visibly smoother. (source)

Mentalis Botox for Dimpled Chin: What to Expect

Injections usually take about 5-10 minutes and can be completed during your lunch break with no downtime. Your provider may ask you to make certain expressions in order to see where to inject. They will clean the area and may use a vibrating tool to help with any discomfort. Some patients report the injections feel like a pinch. Most patients rarely even bleed with injections! You are then free to go about your day, resume your normal routine, and enjoy the results!

You may start to notice a visible smoothing of lines and wrinkles within 24 to 48 hours, with full results in 14 days lasting up to 3-4 months. Botox is not a permanent treatment. If you stop treatment the lines and wrinkles will eventually return.

Hair Loss and Thinning Hair in Murfreesboro? The 3 Treatments You Need to Know About!

Are you looking for treatments for hair loss and thinning hair in Murfreesboro? Well you have come to the right place! Keep reading to find out about our favorite hair game-changers.

The Problem: Hair Loss and Thinning Hair

Let’s face it – no one’s hair gets more luscious as they get older or after they’ve had a baby. Add in the demands of a busy life, stress (thanks, pandemic!), nutritional gaps, and it seems like everyone’s hair could use a little help! While there is no “cure” for hair loss, there are options that have been proven to help with hair loss. Here are our favorite solutions to keep your hair looking as full and thick as possible:

1. PRP Hair Injections

PRP is short for Platelet Rich Plasma. Plasma is the liquid portion of whole blood and plays a key role in the body’s healing process. It is full of your body’s own natural growth factors that regenerate skin and it is the miracle ingredient in vampire facials, but did you know it can also stimulate hair growth? The PRP is first collected by drawing blood from your arm and placing it in a centrifuge so that the plasma can be separated from the red blood cells. The PRP is then injected into the scalp where it works wonders to reduce hair loss and induce the growth of new hair by stimulating the hair follicles to grow hair.

2. Supplements: Nutrafol

Nutrafol is the #1 dermatologist recommended hair growth supplement. It is designed to target the multiple causes of hair loss and thinning hair. It works by targeting key factors that can shorten the growth phase, delay new growth, and cause new hair to grow thinner. Whether your hair issues are caused by nutrition, metabolism, environment, stress or hormones, Nutrafol has got you covered! (Of course, if you take other medications or supplements talk to your doctor before starting any supplement regimen.)
