Everyone, Meet Our New Laser!

What is it?

A new generation of laser treatment, that, unlike many others on the market, can address numerous skin conditions without downtime… which is huge.

You don’t have to make any major changes to your daily routines, and it doesn’t require you to stay in the house for days following treatment.

How does it work?

ADVATx uses two unique wavelengths of light, 589 nm and 1319 nm, combining high-powered yellow and infrared laser energy that targets vernal redness, blood vessel abnormalities, pigment, and acne without damaging the skin.

Laser technology is attracted to reds and browns. This device uses standard laser wavelengths to heat and eilminates unwanted vessels which are filled with red blood.

Who is this laser best for?

The best part of this device is that we can treat anyone at any age.

For younger patients, it’s common to treat acne and small blood vessels.

For those patients in their late 20s and early 30s, w will utilize the ADVATx for general skin health and prevention of skin aging.

For more mature patients, we will treat discoloration due to sun damage as well as fine lines and wrinkles.

It is best for anyone who wants to start out with laser treatments since it is not as intense as the others out there, making it a great first step into your laser skin health journey.

Who is this laser best for?

Our AM GLOW LASER treatment will target those with:

  • Pigment
  • Sun damage
  • General anti-aging
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • An interest in beginning or continuing to progress their skin health with laser treatment technology

Our AM RED CLEAR LASER will target those with:

  • Redness
  • Capillaries
  • Rosacea

OUR AM ACNE CLEAR LASER will target those with:

  • Moderate and active acne
  • Inflammatory acne
  • Acne scars

What are the benefits?

Other laser treatments that treat blood vessels or redness are painful and cause swelling and/or bruising that lasts three to seven days, whereas the ADVATx machine does not.

  • Not as invasive as other lasers
  • No downtime
  • No numbing
  • No pain treatment

How much is it?

We recommend 4-6 sessions to get the results you need, depending on your skin type.

Pricing for this machine is $600 a session, or a series of 4 treatments for $2,100.

We recommend 4-6 sessions to get optimal results. The best way to determine how many sessions you’ll need is to book a consultation with our providers.

Introducing Our New Service: IV Therapy Treatment

We thought we’d make it easy for you to get the nutrients and vitamins that your body needs – quickly and effectively. We now introduce to you our new service, IV Therapy!

What does it do?

Every day, your body requires a certain intake of vitamins and nutrients to maintain a normal function. While the exact levels vary from person to person, the demands of daily life can make it difficult to ingest adequate amounts of these essential vitamins. Even when using multivitamins, your body does not absorb all of the nutrients due to the metabolic process. That’s where IV Therapy Treatment comes in.

How does it work?

IV Therapy delivers what you need directly to your body because it bypasses the digestive systems. We give you an IV which goes directly into your bloodstream, making nutrients available for immediate use.

The best part of getting and IV, is that vitamins are delivered directly to the cells that need them. Easy for us, and even easier for you!

Client Testimony

At 45, I began my journey to health…emotional, spiritual and physical. Many things needed healing and as I walked through the process, I realized this included my skin. Sadly, I had NEVER had any form of skin regimen or discovered products that I loved.

I remember hearing so many positive comments about Ashley Mcfarland Aesthetics and Ashley herself that I became curious. I ran into Ashley one day in town and thought, I am kind of nervous because I do zero for my skin, but I have to meet her and ask for an appointment so we can discuss the health of my skin. She immediately put me at ease and scheduled me an appointment as we stood there in the middle of a store!

As people say, “the rest is history!” Once I met with Ashley and her team I immediately trusted them to care for my skin. They were warm, friendly, honest, extremely educated in skincare, not product pushy, and realistic about what would work for me considering my age and lack of skincare in the past. Due to my history, Ashley started me out slowly with fabulous skincare products and amazing skincare treatments. For the first time in my life, I started a DAILY, healthy skincare routine. It has become a part of my daily self-care, I cannot start or end my day without it!.

I did a complete 180 which meant my face did a complete 180! I remember my first peel was horrible because I had neglected my skin for so long. Damaged and neglected skin came off by the layers. Today, when I do a peel there is hardly anything peeling away. It is all due to Ashley and her team. Their skincare education runs deep and I am thankful they share their knowledge and expertise with the women (and men) of Murfreesboro and me.

And my daughters!!! They, too, have set up wonderful skincare routines, thanks to AMA giving me the ability to role~model healthy habits for them. My girls feel so comfortable with Ashley and her team. They love the AMA beauties as much as I do!

Have you met Ashley? She is such an intelligent woman. She is also a brilliant business leader who cares deeply for her clients and her team. Every detail of the AMA day matters…from the spectacular customer service to the individualized treatment and the beautiful environment of her space…she pours her heart and soul into it and as a client you feel it.

So thank you to Ashley and the entire team! I always look forward to my monthly skincare treatments (I highly recommend joining their skincare club) because I know I am practicing good health and much needed self~care. I also look forward to it because I recognize that time spent with the lovely women on the AMA team in their soothing space, brings a dose of good health to my soul as well!

Understanding Fraxel & Why You Need It

What is it?:

Fraxel is a pioneering piece of technology that revolutionized the way we approach laser treatments. Laser treatments like Fraxel, support treatments that we do every day. There is so much synergy. It’s not one or the other and it was not made to be exclusive, and there is a place for all of it.

Educating our customers is what we strive to do, to make sure they understand the benefits of what this treatment is capable of.

What parts of your body can you treat:

The thickness of your skin in the face can be treated much more aggressively compared to the rest of your body. On parts of your hands, feet, arms, and legs – it’s very different skin to what you have on your face. Your neck and chest are very delicate and can have a harder time healing. We make sure we take the right steps to get you to where you need to be.

The big factors of Fraxel:

– Your recovery time is quicker.

– You can treat all skin types and with less chance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

– Fewer complications and fewer chances of infections and scarring.

– Enables us to treat off the face and deliver that energy in a safe, non-ablative procedure to other parts of the body.

What do we suggest Fraxel for?

Anyone who is starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles along with dyschromia and pigmentation, and wants help getting their skin to a better place. There is nothing better on the market for a nice refresh for these kinds of skin concerns with minimal downtime.

– Fraxel was created purely for medical aesthetics. Over time, however, it is now used to slow down sunspots and attack early skin cancer by wiping it off and giving you a nice blank canvas to start again with.

– This laser hits deeper into the skin and will do a lot more in terms of remodeling. Because of the depth, you will get more collagen remodeling which is great for fine lines and wrinkles and improvement of the texture of the skin.

– It’s also great for stretch marks, post-surgical scars, acne scars, and preventative acne measures.

This laser can work great for younger and older people as well. The level of Fraxel treatment can vary, and you can use it as a preventative measure or to treat your skin development over the years.

The most important part of  Fraxel is the appropriate aftercare. It’s vital to be careful with how much time you spend in the sun to protect what this procedure does

In conclusion, this laser caters to a number of skin concerns and offers great results with minimal downtime.

Growth Factors and Their Importance

All Skincare is NOT created equal

Carla holding our ZO Growth Factor Serum

What are Growth Factors?

Have you ever wondered why your skin just doesn’t have the “umph” it did in your younger days?  Have you lost that glow and plumpness you had in your glory days?  Unfortunately, this is a natural part of the aging process, and it happens to all of us.  It is in large part due to the loss of our skin’s communicators called GROWTH FACTORS (GF). GF’s are proteins that are manufactured by cells.  They are responsible for sending signals to other cells, commanding them to reproduce and repair.

In our younger years, our bodies produce large quantities of growth factors, keeping the skin thick and healthy.  Production of elastin fibers are also at their best.  This is the reason our skin can maintain a healthy elasticity and glow when we are in our 20’s. By our late 20’s/early 30’s, the growth factor process greatly slows down.  The skin starts producing smaller amounts of these growth factors, resulting in slower cell growth and skin becomes thinner and less supple.  This breakdown in cell function along with environmental factors such as sun exposure and pollution can really wreak havoc on the integrity of our skin health, causing wrinkles and sagging.  Helping our cells out by adding a growth factor to our skin care regimen can a lot of times be the game changer our skin has been searching for.

Growth Factor Types

There are many types of growth factors that can be derived from many sources.  Typically, they are divided into two groups…human derived and plant derived.  Human derived GF’s can have many sources, such as your own blood (also known as platelet rich plasma or PRP), and other human tissues such as skin cells.  Skincare companies have really risen to the challenge in creating the fountain of youth by developing some amazing products containing GF’s.  These companies tend to have different sources and methods to creating their own growth factors products.

PRP

PRP (platelet rich plasma) is one of the most effective ways to utilize your own growth factors.  The plasma containing platelets is separated from the red blood cells by a simple blood draw in office.  The blood is spun in a centrifuge to make this separation process happen.  This is easy and only takes a few minutes!  The plasma containing your PRP is utilized in different ways to stimulate collagen and promote cell growth.  It can be injected underneath the skin to help improve elasticity and thickness, making the cells healthier in general.  It is also used as the glide component in microneedling.

With this method, the PRP is driven into the skin through the channels created by the needles.  PRP is known to speed the healing process when used in post care for just about any skin treatment such as laser skin resurfacing or RF microneedling just to name a couple.  An awesome benefit to using PRP is that it comes from your own body, so there is zero chance of having an adverse reaction to it, making it a WIN WIN!

SoME Skincare with Growth Factors

Plant derived Growth Factors vs Human derived

Plant derived GF are engineered in a lab to mimic human derived GF’s.  Sources for these include barley and corn.

Both types have been shown in research to be effective for reducing wrinkles, improving firmness and elasticity, and boosting cell turnover.

We love our skin care products here at AMA that provide great growth factor benefits!

Skin Medica is renowned for their golden child, TNS (which stands for Tissue Nutrient Solution). They incorporate a high concentration of patented growth factors, over 380 to be more specific.  It is a great human-based growth factor solution and is found in several of their products such as TNS Advanced Serum, TNS Recovery Complex and TNS Eye Repair.

TNS Advance Serum Growth Factor

Another favorite growth factor product line here is the ZO skincare line created by Dr. Zein Obagi.  This is a great example of a plant-based growth factor!  ZO has a GF serum and a GF eye serum.  Both are big hits with AMA clients!  Feel free to talk to your aesthetician about which one is best for you and your skin!

What is Fraxel?

It is that time of year we have all been waiting for! Cool weather, sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes and FRAXEL!

Fall and winter are the absolute best seasons to remove unwanted pigment and sun damage from our skin. If you have overindulged in the summer sun, fear not. We have your solution. Fraxel!

What is Fraxel? Fraxel is a brand of laser that delivers fractional skin resurfacing. Fraxel Dual in particular, features two wavelengths of 1927 and 1550 to treat sun damage, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles and acne scars. It can completely change the overall tone and texture of a person’s skin. Fraxel delivers tiny dots of laser, only treating a fraction of the skin, leaving healthy skin in between the treated areas, which speeds healing and minimizes downtime. It is the “Gold Standard” in laser skin resurfacing. Compared to other more invasive treatments, the downtime for Fraxel is way more desirable considering the dramatic results it can deliver. Patients receiving Fraxel are back to a normal routine within a week.

Things you should know before you schedule your Fraxel…

  • A consultation is always recommended before scheduling any laser treatment. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for laser treatments.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure for at least one month prior to (and after) your treatment
  • Let our office know if you are prone to getting cold sores. You will need to prep with a prescription of an antiviral to prevent an outbreak in the treated area.
  • You will need to discontinue use of all exfoliating products (retinols, glycolics, salicylic) 10 days prior to treatment.
  • Some patients prone to hyperpigmentation will need to prep with a product containing hydroquinone or another brightening agent to suppress their melanin (pigment) for a few weeks prior to treatment and post treatment.

What to expect the day of a Fraxel Treatment…

  • Your provider will cleanse your skin and take before pictures.
  • Numbing cream will be applied for approximately one hour prior to treatment
  • Our office offers the option to add nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to any Fraxel treatment for an additional charge. This is a favorite, especially for those who tend to get a little anxious with treatments! It gives a more carefree experience, and it wears off in minutes, making it completely safe to drive home afterwards. We recommend eating some food prior to nitrous use.
  • Fraxel in our office always includes PRP (platelet rich plasma). PRP is such a fantastic way to increase your results! In case you are new to PRP, it is simple. Your blood will be drawn during the numbing process and spun down to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. Plasma contains platelets which contain growth factors. These growth factors will help to stimulate your own collagen and help healthy cells reproduce. The result is thicker, more elastic skin! Applying PRP after Fraxel will help calm skin quicker and speed up the healing process. Basically, a no brainer! One of our experienced injectors can also inject the PRP underneath the skin. Injecting it under the eyes for example can improve crepiness and hollowness. It is also a wonderful way to improve “smoker lines” around the mouth.
  • A post care kit will be sent home after the first treatment and your provider will go over all post care with you.
  • Immediately after treatment, the skin will feel sunburned and will be intense for about 3 hours. After 3 hours, intensity subsides greatly and will be very tolerable.
  • Swelling is expected post Fraxel. In fact, the swelling is what creates the collagen we all want and need.

After Fraxel….

Downtime with Fraxel varies from patient to patient, depending on treatment parameters and settings. The deeper the treatment, the more swelling expected. Usually by day 3, the skin will feel rough and have a sandpaper like texture. These are all microscopic scabs that will appear dark and eventually slough away, leaving fresh new skin. Gentle products only for the week following, and a good physical sunscreen are important. Avoid sweating for approximately 72 hours and make sure to wear a hat when outdoors. You are generating new baby skin and it is VERY susceptible to sun damage.

A series of 3 is always a good rule of thumb when planning Fraxel. Spacing the treatments 4 to 6 weeks apart will maximize outcome. Results will last longer with a proper at home regimen, including a retinol, sunscreen, and antioxidants. Your aesthetician will be happy to recommend some great products to get the most from your Fraxel.

Fall Procedure Prep

Though temperatures are high, fall is right around the corner! Fall makes for a perfect time to schedule the treatment you’ve been putting off all summer. Whether correcting sun damage, removing dead skin, reversing the signs of aging, or helping with pigmentation, we have the right procedure for you and your skin concerns.

Here are a few recommendations to prepare the skin for any future TREATMENT (Vivace, Fraxel, VI or Chemical Peels):

Fraxel being performed on a patient
  • It is best to prep the skin with a well-rounded skincare regimen for 1-2 months in advance before any treatment; cleanser, antioxidants, vitamin c, retinol, and SPF. Better known as, our Big 5 of Skin Care. Growth factors are also very beneficial in helping create healthier cells. Good skincare creates healthier tissue and will help the skin react better to the treatment for optimum results!
  • If prone to hyperpigmentation, the skin needs to be prepped with hydroquinone (an ingredient that suppresses melanin), ideally for 1-2 months. Hydroquinone will also be ideal to keep pigment suppressed post treatment.
  • Please let your treatment provider know if you are prone to cold sores in the area being treated so that an antiviral medication can be prescribed. Heat from the laser can trigger an outbreak in these people if not suppressed.
  • Make sure to stay out of the sun 7-10 days prior to treatment
  • Stop retinol use 7-10 days prior to treatment. You may continue use of hydroquinone up until the night before.
  • Avoid waxing one week before and 4 weeks after treatment
  • Chemical peels are a great treatment that will resurface the skin and greatly improve tone and texture. It is a great way to quickly remove damaged skin, especially if you have an important event coming up with little time to prep. (We all have busy social schedules during the holiday season). Fall is typically the beginning of “chemical peel season” since we aren’t in the sun as much. Your aesthetician will know which one is best!
ZO 3 Step Peel being prepared

Did you know your skin requires different products in the cooler months? Here are a few recommendations from our Aesthetician, Tricia about achieving your optimal fall skin through the use of products:

ZO Skin Care
  • At home skincare regimen is an absolute MUST! Investing in medical grade skin products is so important if you aren’t doing so already. Medical grade skincare contains the percentages of ingredients that are needed to achieve the best results. Over the counter products can often contain low quality ingredients and/or ingredients that are not strong enough to make noticeable changes, only leading to frustration and feeling like you have wasted money and time.
  • Retinol products will turn cells over quicker and help remove top layers of skin cells, revealing new fresh skin. Your aesthetician can recommend one that will best work with your skin type. All retinols are NOT created equal! Sometimes it is necessary to use a retinol less frequently in the colder months since the air is dryer and skin is typically a little more sensitive. Just be mindful to stay on a regular regimen and don’t stop completely!
  • Antioxidants are a must to protect your skin. Vitamins C, E will help protect your skin from environmental factors that will only break down cells and compromise the quality of the cells. This is especially a problem in fall and winter as the weather changes. Vitamin C is also serves as a great brightener!
  • Hyperpigmentation is always a big concern after the summer months. There are medical grade lighteners and brighteners that can really help! Hydroquinone is an example of a lightener that works by suppressing the melanin your body creates. It is a great fighter against unwanted pigment, especially when used in unison with a medical grade retinol. There are also non hydroquinone lighteners that prove to be very helpful such as Kojic acid.
  • SPF is MANDATORY in the fight against aging year-round. Do not slack in the fall/winter! Without it, your cells are vulnerable to damage from UVA, UVB and IR rays. Ingredients such as Zinc and Titanium will physically protect the skin from these types of rays. Always choose an SPF of 30 or higher and high-quality ingredients.
  • Sometimes skin needs a heavier moisturizer entering the colder months.
  • Adding a lip moisturizer might be necessary to combat the dryness of colder temps and windier days. Getting yourself on a regular regimen that includes all these things will improve your skin tremendously. It will also help strengthen it in preparation for anti-aging treatments, such as RF microneedling and lasers, all of which are ideal to do in the fall and winter months!

Let’s get fall ready by scheduling an appointment with one of our providers. It’s never too early to get on the books for your first treatment. Schedule today by booking online http://www.ashleymcfarlandaesthetics.com

The Power of Sculptra

What is Sculptra?

The power of Sculptra is equivalent of reversing the clock. Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable that helps gradually replace lost collagen, the most common protein in the body that is used to form a framework to support cells and tissue, for results that can last up to two years. Sculptra is different than your traditional filler as it works with your body to stimulate collagen production lost to aging while rebuilding and reinforcing your skin’s structural foundation.

Why is collagen important?

Collagen is a fibrous protein in the deep dermis that gives skin structure and supports the functions of elastin and hyaluronic acid (HA), which helps maintain the skin’s shape, while keeping it smooth and hydrated. A healthy supply of collagen makes for a more youthful-looking complexion.

COLLAGEN FACTS:

How many sessions of Sculptra is needed and how often should they be performed?

On average, a series of three treatment sessions over the course of a few months will be needed. The number of injections at each session will vary, depending on the degree of correction needed and the treatment plan determined by you and your provider. The power of Sculptra can restore years worth of aging in just a few treatments.

Who is a good candidate for Sculptra?

Good candidates for Sculptra treatments are those who want to restore fullness to their face slowly and discreetly to correct fine lines and wrinkles. Sculptra can treat submalar hollowing, jawlines, cheek sinking and temple hollowing.

What do I do after my Sculptra treatment?

  1. A cold pack is recommended for helping prevent bruising and to calm common swelling. Within the first 24 hours of treatment, apply a cloth-wrapped cold pack to the treated area for a few minutes at a time. Never apply ice directly to the skin.
  2. Facial massage is an important step in the healing process. Massage the treated area for five minutes five times a day for five days after treatment, as recommended by your provider.
  3. Avoiding direct sunlight is advised. After treatment, excessive sunlight and UV lamp exposure should be avoided until any initial swelling and redness go away. Your doctor will provide guidelines on sunscreen protection and how to avoid excessive sunlight.
